Wanted!! registrar and Web Admin

Hi All,

Well, they say management is all about recruitment and it is as true in the role of chairman as it was when I was a National Sales Manager! as such we are seeking members willing to donate time and effort to the following roles:

Registrar

Web admin

both roles are vital to the smooth running of the association and require that time is dedicated to the positions. I won’t lie to you; at times they will be quite demanding and need some serious attention so please think long and hard if you want to do it.

For the registrar you will be responsible for maintaining the membership database, issuing the membership packs and dealing with enquiries from new, expired or potential members. THIS CAN TAKE UP LOTS OF TIME although we are working on streamlining the process based on feedback from the outgoing registrar and from members themselves.

The web Admin role will need to be filled by someone with experience both in web design and database management and all the magical stuff that goes with it. experience of wordpress would also be a bonus as thats what we use. we have several updates to carry out and also a server migration which the new incumbent would have to manage and drive forward.

if you’re still interested then let me know at chair@ukapu.org.uk

Thanks folks

Steve Morley aka Wallace comes on board as consultant for the North East area

I am delighted to be able to announce that a well known and respected member of the airsoft community has joined the ranks of UKAPU as a consultant to help us further promote UKAPU in the North East.

As an active site owner/operator and player Wallace can bring a wealth of experience and thoughts to UKAPU and we look forward to hearing some of his ideas and implementing them wherever possible.

In line with the constitution, Wallace will have no voting rights on committee business to maintain impartiality which is the cornerstone of the association.

So welcome Wallace and thank you for stepping up. To end, heres a few words from the man himself:

“After serving for almost 10 years as a Royal Marines Commando I left to settle down and set up a landscaping company. I quickly found Airsoft through some friends from my paintballing days prior to joining up and soon became hooked. I soon found that the sites i played did not inspire me, particularly from a customer service point of view.

I took the plunge with some close friends and opened our own Airsoft site which continues to grow and have recently opened both site shop and an online shop. Though i will hold no voting rights with UKAPU i look forward to sharing a site and shop owners perspective on UKAPU affairs and hope to help others find and embrace this fantastic sport.

Steve ‘Wallace’ Morley”

UKAPU Response to Negative Media Coverage

This article concerns every UK Airsofter and is something we should all be aware of.  The threat to Airsoft remains prevalent and continues to put the sport in the spotlight.

Recent weeks have seen firearms brought to the fore by the media. Rightfully so. No right minded person would fail to be abhorred by the killings in America and other fire-arm related incidents in the UK and Europe. Now though, we see Airsoft starting to be picked up on by certain news outlets and that is where the concern of the UKAPU lies.

Airsoft players may be aware of two articles in as many weeks in the Scottish Sunday Post, which are available to view here;

http://www.ukapu.org.uk/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/attachment-1.jpg
http://www.ukapu.org.uk/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/553146_103993676445803_365031190_n_zpsebd718c8.jpg
http://www.ukapu.org.uk/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/184433_103993666445804_2064922832_n_zps46dcb682.jpg

It is clear that the will to instigate tighter controls over our sport and hobby has been shown by a those in politics. The media covered, in this case, the purchasing of IFs (imitation firearms) from convenience shops and other small retailers. The article’s author’s response was, as to be expected, reactionary but at the same time difficult to argue against, at least in principle.

Those of us involved in Airsoft, or shooting in the wider sense, are well aware of the general sentiment in the public towards any type of gun. That is why we look to the law to guide us, we pay attention to changes in those laws and we are careful to remain within them at all times. What the shooting community and skirmishers alike cannot mitigate against are those who see no issue with their actions and mistake what we all know to be toy guns, as just that and not as potentially offensive items.

Should children under eighteen be allowed to buy IFs? No, of course not. The law is clear and airsoft falls in line with other restricted purchases in this case. Do IFs allow for too much movement within the law? Yes, it’s a simple issue in that, whilst tighter controls might not be to everyone’s liking, the application to UKARA and the knowledge of where, when and how to use a RIF (replica imitation firearm) is afforded to those deemed capable.

When a shopkeeper sells a restricted item to someone who’s underage, it is the shopkeeper breaking the law. When an adult, such as the one in the Sunday Post’s article, purchases an IF for someone who’s underage they are not breaking the law. This is the distinction between where the media stands and the law, that we worked to have amended in our favour as skirmishers, is applied.

We, as members of the public who take part in airsoft as a competitive sport and enjoyable hobby, must understand how important it is to respect other people’s views. We are not gun-nuts with an agenda. We have earned the involvement of the police and the government over years of direct discussion. Our own reactions must remain tempered, intelligent and respectful so that we may continue to be seen as capable to use replicas in a safe, controlled and considered manner.

The actions of the few, be that the retailers (wholly airsoft or those who simply happen to stock IFs) or individuals, must not be reflected by the community as a whole.

To this end, the UKAPU has taken steps to raise our voice through the means of contacting members of parliament along with those authors and editors responsible for the articles in question. You can be assured that the Committee, the organisation’s members and it’s affiliates will do all they can to uphold the defense afforded to us all.

We ask that individuals do not take the matter in to their own hands but instead put forward cogent points which will allow us to further our discussions with those who have the power to make decisions.

Keep a close eye on the UKAPU via our website www.UKAPU.org.uk for more information and updates regarding how we are helping to protect our hobby. If you’d like to join our growing community and show that we have a voice as one group, please visit the membership section.

Help change the law for fellow airsofters in Sweden

As some of you might know, who frequent the many airsoft forums out there, there is a growing movement in Sweden to amend a current law that precludes ANY GBB gun from operating on gas – whether it be green gas or propane. The reason this law is considered a wee bit daft is because they do allow for HPA, spring powered and CO2 power!

you can help by going to this website and lending your support

Thanks,

Membership Changes

Hi All,

I’m sure you are all gearing up for the bearded one to bring you tons of airsoft goodness next week; I’m assuming that the Mayans got it wrong at this point as Im still here stuck infront of the computer.

Just to let you all know that we agreed a few dramatic changes to the way membership will be offered moving forwards.

Firstly, anyone signing up now either online or in person can sign to self certify that they are a skirmisher. We decided that as we do not wish to be an alternative scheme to enable the purchasing of RIF’s and the verification process could take quite a while; as some of you can attest to, for which I apologise, the self certification route is by far the best and most streamlined approach.

It is important to remember that UKAPU is still an organisation for skirmishers, that hasn’t changed and this shift does not take away from that at all.

We hope that this will help win back those people who may have been deterred in the past.

If anyone has any questions about their membership, whether it being new or a renewal please email membership@ukapu.org.uk

The second change over will be to offer a rolling renewal so you never have to worry about your membership lapsing. This won’t be an immediate change but one we will phase in overtime.

Thanks All. I hope you all have a wonderful Xmas and a very happy and prosperous new year.

Regards,

Phil

Committee and Management Vacancies

Whilst the AGM was very productive; we do desperately need a couple if committee positions filling as a matter of some urgency so I ask you our members to see if you can dedicate a few hours a month to help the association to continue to grow and flourish.

We need:

Registrar

This committee post is integral to the smooth running of the association. You will be required to work closely with all committee members but mainly the treasurer and chairman to ensure all memberships are processed in a timely fashion, the database is updated accordingly, members are notified in due course of important events such as the AGM and renewal dates. You would be needed to take part in a once a month Skype meeting with the committee and management members In a nutshell that’s it. With the changes to the sign up procedures I would envisage this would only require maybe 2 hours a week to keep on top of things.

Press officer

As the title suggests, this role will involve being the main conduit for information both from UKAPU to the media and various forums but also back to the committee. You will need to ensure articles are submitted to the various magazines in time for their deadlines in line with the press policies we have and the associations constitution. You will be the first point of contact for any media enquiries, again, in line with press policies.
A fundamental component of the role will be the online media such as Facebook, twitter, the various forums and news portals and our own dedicated forums.
Again, participation in the monthly Skype meetings is a prerequisite. Time wise, it depends how active you are within the community but it may be more time intensive than other positions. You’ll also need thick skin as you will be the public face of UKAPU and not everyone will be friendly! Saying that it can be a very rewarding and pleasurable job and give you an opportunity to see airsoft from another POV whilst forging good links and relationships.

Discounts Manager

This co-opted manager is solely responsible for contacting interested parties and negotiating things such as discounts at shops for our members.

Could all interested parties email me a brief bio, what they want to do for UKAPU and why and full contact details to chair@ukapu.org.uk
